home is where our STORY begins…

we’re 4th generation merino growers who have farmed this land since 1923.

Our ancestors were pioneers and now we are harnessing their pioneering spirit to reinforce the spirit and diversity of Matangi's rich and colourful history of living on the land.

Our curiosity piqued with all the keen bikers we saw exploring our farm, we decided to buy a couple of bikes and give it a go too.  Turns out – mountain biking in our backyard is actually quite good fun!

Matangi Station MTB is the result of a strong collaborative effort between us and the like-minded and adventurous people of Alexandra who really enjoy to get out on their bikes in our rugged terrain.  It has been developed thanks to a number of local legends have helped to mold the epic landscape into some of the best raw natural trails in New Zealand. Early reports are in, and rumour has it…the riding is WORLD CLASS!

Come and check out our epic new mountain park playground in the heart of Central Otago!

Farm Life…

…will always be our main passion, although MTB riding comes in a close second.

The whole family loves this place we are lucky enough to call home. We are caretakers of the land and want other people to enjoy it too.

Matangi is the best playground you could wish for no matter what age you are. The peace and quiet, the endless views and fresh air are things that we never take for granted.

We run 8,300 merinos over 11,000 hectares. Matangi Station is 27kms from front to back. We grow super fine merino wool and sell it to the global marketplace.

We are ZQRX certified which means we are one of the “worlds leading ethical wool’’ producers.

Three generations live and work on the Station at present including the next generation free range kids who love this playground too.

There is never a dull moment on the farm - what with mustering, shearing, tailing, haymaking, repairs & maintenance and the odd wool shed party to keep us busy!

Wool Fact: Did you know that one single hair on your head is about twice the thickness of the wool we produce which is around 17.5 microns.

our environment is a passion to share

  • Heritage

Matangi is a place that is in our blood. To assess our track alignment for effects on 1900 and later heritage values, we hired a heritage consultant. Pre-1900 water races are being used as tracks and all users are required to protect these assets and stay within the trails.

  • Flora and Fauna

To help protect our wildlife, plants and ecosystems, we are lucky enough to be advised by some amazingly qualified people who guide us in the best way to grow on our land. Their knowledge is vital in our quest to practice sustainable and regenerative farming methods.

  • Culture

We can always learn from others. Being able to understand and accept alternative ways of doing things allows us to grow as individuals and as a community. Being aware of the diversity in our region enables us to embrace everyone’s contribution to our place.

  • Sustainable

As a station we are ZQ certified which means we are one of the “worlds leading ethical wool’’ producers.

We followed similar principles when setting up Matangi Station MTB - we wanted to establish the park in a way that meets our own farming needs without compromising the enjoyment of current and future generations of this epic landscape. Our focus is to showcase this environment to the thrill seekers in a way that minimises their impact on the land. By doing things sustainably we encourage and strengthen the community bond to protect what we all enjoy.

Our family’s mission…

…is to provide the most exciting, raw and rocky natural off-road MTB riding in New Zealand.

We strive for excellence in everything we do, to challenge ourselves both on and off the trails. This journey was a leap into the unknown, a challenge to explore what we could grow differently from traditional farming. The learning curve has been as steep as some of our drop-offs.

We’ll see you out there…
